The Serene Turkish Riviera: Bozburun Peninsula

While we were searching for a location where we spend our one week holiday in Turkey, we had specifically two criteria; One is being on the coastal side that allow us to swim just in front of the hotel and the other one is not being very crowded. Since the many of the destinations in southern coasts of Turkey is being overcrowded on the peak season. we didn´t want to select  such a location. Gladly, Bozburun is more than we expected in terms of its natural beauty and serenity even in the peak season. Bozburun Peninsula is located where the Mediterranean and Aegean converges, therefore the very southwest of Turkey. There is almost nothing afterwards, and the road to the Peninsula is very curvy therefore its very calm. Due to its proximity to the island Symi and the opposite coast, Bozburun has a very flat sea; its like a fjord. DSC_0197-02

Transportation: Transportation to the peninsula is little bit tricky since there is no direct access to the location. We came by bus to Marmaris and from there took a public bus and it took 75 minutes to reach the Peninsula. It is also possible to reach Bozburun from Dalaman or Bodrum airports. From both you can take the public transport in the summer season or you can arrange a pickup service. Compared to Marmaris or Bodrum, it is hard to reach but if you are looking for natural beauty and serenity, you will fall in love with the peninsula.

Bozburun is a very small fishing village during the winter.  It has 6 months of summer season, and weather is hot since it is located in the very southern part of Turkey. If you don’t like the hot weather (like me), it is better to visit the region on may/june/september/october. We stayed in Melisa Hotel and it was even better than we expected. The hotel rooms are basic but it is very clean and every meal we ate in the hotel was very delicious. Also the siblings who owns the hotel are very friendly and helpful in every aspect. It has a magnificent view of the peninsula with the beautiful bougainvilleas. The region has a rocky surrounding so the hotel has a wooden pier kind of beach, thats exactly how we like.

If you come to Bozburun you should go for a daily boat tour or rent a boat  to visit its beautiful coves such as Bozukkale, Uc Tas, Akvaryum and Dirsekbuku that offers every shades of blue within its purity. We went an awesome daily boat tour with; Aras Bey 2016. The tour departs from the Bozburun harbor at 10:30 and comes back at 17:00; stops five times for swimming in different coves.

During your stay in Bozburun you should also visit nearby villages such as Orhaniye, Hisaronu, Turgut, Selimiye, Sogut and Ciftlik. You should especially visit Sogut during the sunset. From the region you can also visit Symi (Greece) very conveniently.

If you like to walk and interested in history, keep in mind that the remains of the ancient city Thyssanos stand to the southwest of Sogut. Despite, there were many ancient settlements spread over the region in the past, very few made it to the present; what you can see is very limited due to the lack of excavations. It was home to many settlements in the past because the regions was rich in marble quarries. The biggest town in the region named after those those marble supplies as Marmaris.

What to eat;

Definitely seafood especially octopus and calamari, the dishes with olive oil specific to Aegean region in Turkey. There are local fishes called Iskoroz and Melanur, you should also try those. We recommend; Ahtapotcu Mehmet (Sogut), Manzara (Sogut).

Last Words;

Keep in mind that it is very hot in summer, bring sun protection creams.

The region has very limited sandy beaches.

Peninsula does not have clubs or bars, so if you are looking for nightlife; Bozburun would not be your favorite place.
